Lastly, as you might expect of a finance company, we work really hard when we need to, but we don’t work hard just for the sake of it. We don’t miss our kids’ concerts, we work out during the day, and we usually sign off early on Fridays.
About the position
As Controller, you will own the quality, consistency and timeliness of accounting across Eightx’s portfolio of bookkeeping clients. You will oversee month-end close, review and sign off on the work of accountants and bookkeepers, set and enforce accounting standards and processes, and act as the senior accounting authority for your assigned clients and their Fractional CFOs.
This is a role for someone who can both operate hands-on and lead. You will tighten close timelines, catch risks before they reach clients, standardize working papers, and mentor the team while partnering closely with our CFOs to turn clean books into reliable financial insight. You will work with a high degree of independence and be accountable for the integrity of the numbers your clients rely on.
You will be working across a wide range of tech and software platforms including NetSuite, Shopify, Amazon Seller Central and Vendor Central, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Hubdoc, Dext, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Glew.io, Rippling, Gusto, Bill.com, and more.
What you will do
Time Zone: You will need to work 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM PST or EST (Monday–Friday), with some flexibility for client needs.
Close & Financial Control
Own the monthly close across your portfolio, ensuring client books are closed accurately and efficiently within two to ten business days after month end.
Review and sign off on close files, reconciliations and working papers prepared by accountants and bookkeepers before they reach clients or CFOs.
Maintain and enforce standards for working papers fixed assets, loans, prepaids, accruals and other balance sheet accounts that can withstand audit scrutiny.
Own accrual postings for missing but expected expenses, applying professional judgment where full information is unavailable.
Lead review of P&L variances across revenue streams (Shopify, Amazon, Wholesale) and expense accounts.
Investigate and explain unusual balances such as negative expense accounts, unrealized FX gains/losses, and off-trend line items.
Coordinate with tax accountants and CPA firms on year-end adjusting entries and ensure proper posting in the accounting system.
Bookkeeping & Accounting Operations
Oversee weekly bookkeeping quality across clients, ensuring accurate and timely transaction categorization and step in hands-on where needed.
Use Xero, QuickBooks Online and other platforms to design, create and adjust charts of accounts aligned to internal and client needs.
Own multi-currency accounting including FX revaluations, unrealized gains/losses, and cross-currency reconciliations.
Ensure monthly reconciliation of Shopify, Amazon and other eCommerce integrations to the general ledger.
Oversee accounts receivable and payable, ensuring invoices are correctly dated, applied and matched to payments.
Review manual journals and credit memos created to correct entries and maintain accuracy.
Manage inventory account reconciliations and year-end inventory adjustments.
Set up and maintain templates for consolidated budgets and actuals-vs-budget reporting.
Troubleshooting and supporting the team and clients on complicated/complex accounting matters.
Client Management & Communication
Serve as the senior accounting point of contact for an assigned portfolio of clients and their Fractional CFOs.
Respond to client queries promptly and professionally, providing clear and well-documented responses.
Participate in client calls and ensure recap notes and action items are prepared and distributed following each session.
Proactively communicate outstanding items, open questions and any risks to CFOs, clients and internal team leads.
Ensure timely delivery of financial reports, working files and supporting schedules required by clients and senior reviewers.
Compliance & Reporting
Ensure clients remain up to date with regulatory filings including sales tax (US/UK/EU), payroll, and corporate filings.
Research tax obligations (e.g., EU VAT liabilities, UK/US sales tax) and escalate findings to the appropriate stakeholder.
Ensure working papers clearly support financial statement balances and can withstand audit scrutiny.
Own the preparation and delivery of weekly flash reports and monthly financial packages for client review.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Review the work of bookkeepers and accountants, providing constructive feedback and holding the quality bar.
Develop team members by answering questions, sharing best practices, and modeling Eightx’s standards.
Identify and drive process improvements; participate in team L10 meetings and flag blockers.
What you must have
5+ years of experience in bookkeeping and/or accounting, including at least 2 years in a Controller, Senior, or equivalent review/oversight capacity.
Strong proficiency in Xero; experience with QuickBooks Online strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience with eCommerce accounting including Shopify, Amazon Seller/Vendor, and multi-currency environments.
Solid understanding of accrual-basis accounting, including prepaids, accruals, deferred revenue, and FX revaluation.
A track record of reviewing others’ work and owning close quality and financial accuracy.
Ability to investigate and explain financial anomalies using independent judgment and structured reasoning.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English comfortable corresponding directly with clients.
Self-motivated and highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple clients, deadlines, and team members simultaneously.
Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with evolving processes and occasional ambiguity.
High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy you double-check, verify, and take ownership of your work.
Available to work 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM PST / 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM EST (Monday–Friday), with some flexibility for client needs.
Your experience and education
CPA or CA qualification (India, US, Canada, or UK) strongly preferred.
Experience with Hubdoc, Dext, or Rippling.
Prior experience in public practice or audit.
